Charging at your destination: the challenge of a 1,000 km trip from Barcelona to Paris

Powerdot

At Powerdot, we’re transforming the electric vehicle (EV) charging experience to make long-distance journeys convenient, accessible and stress-free. Together with our hardware supplier, Kempower, we travelled 1,000 km from Barcelona to Paris in an Audi Q6 E-tron to test our charging stations and demonstrate how simple and enjoyable long-distance EV travel can be.

The protagonists of this adventure were Ferran Menescal, Kempower’s Sales Director for Iberia, Carlos Álvarez, Director of Operations for Powerdot Spain, and César Ciaurriz, Operations Coordinator for Powerdot Spain.

Destination Charging: Making EV Travel Easier

In partnership with Kempower’s innovative fast-charging technology, we have deployed fast-charging stations in over 1,700 locations across Europe, including supermarkets, shopping centers, restaurants and hotels.

During this 12-hour trip, we stopped at the Powerdot stations at Ibis Perpignan, Intermarché Massiac and Léon de Bruxelles in Bourges, France. These fast-charging stations, equipped with Kempower’s dynamic power distribution technology, enabled us to charge quickly, reaching up to 200 kW in just 30 minutes.

In total, the team spent just 120 minutes recharging during the trip, taking advantage of this time to rest, grab a bite to eat or stretch their legs. You can see a summary of the trip here on YouTube.

A smooth EV charging experience

With Powerdot, charging isn’t just about energy, it’s also about comfort. Our stations are equipped with multiple payment options, including payment terminals (TPE) and QR codes, and are compatible with all electric mobility applications (eMSP, like Chargemap for example) and browsers (Google Maps, Waze…). This seamless experience means that drivers can recharge their vehicles with no questions asked.

“We planned the route well and it was easy to find fast charging points along the way, which underlines the growing EV infrastructure in Europe,” added Ferran.

“Powerdot is the largest fast-charging network in France, with over 5,000 active charging points” explained Carlos. “Even considering that in Spain we face bureaucratic and administrative challenges that delay the commissioning of our chargers, we continue having a significant growth with almost  600 live charging points. In parallel, the 37,000-plus operating public charging points in the country today are more than enough for the EV on the road, and operators such as Powerdot remain focused on providing ultra-fast charging infrastructure to users,” he added.

For his part, César concluded, “Stops for recharging coincided perfectly with natural breaks, so the overall journey time was not affected.” He also adds, “EV travel today is not only possible, but in my opinion, the driving experience has nothing to envy that of a combustion vehicle.”

Expanding our destination charging network

At Powerdot, we’re committed to building on these advances. Our mission is to offer fast, reliable charging at natural stopping places, whether for shopping, entertainment or daily activities. Our goal is to have 15,000 fast and ultra-fast charging points in service across Europe by the end of 2025.

According to official sources (Gireve), Powerdot is the largest fast-charging network in France, with over 5,100 charge points and 860 stations. In Europe, it is the 4th largest fast-charging network, according to Bloomberg.
